The second Gold Medal of 2000 was presented to Placido Domingo on 30 June, again at the Festival Hall, at the end of a concert performance of Verdi’s rarely performed La Battaglia di Legnano by the Royal Opera House. The capacity audience rose to their feet to applaud Domingo as Sir John Tooley made the presentation and paid tribute to his extraordinary achievements over the thirty years of his career.
