Côr CF1

Côr CF1 is one of five shortlistees for the 2023 RPS Inspiration Award, voted for by the public. Although voting has now closed, we invite you to read about this year's shortlisted entities.

Choral enthusiasts and those involved in the world of choral competitions will no doubt be familiar with Côr CF1, which started out as a youth choir and has evolved to become one of Wales’ leading mixed-voice choirs. The choir is especially known for promoting the Welsh language and, as a passionate advocate for Welsh composers, regularly commissions and performs new music. Celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2022, the 40-strong group were crowned Choir of the World at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod this year with a programme of Welsh, French and Russian songs.

Previous successes have included BBC Choir of the Year in 2014, singing at the Rugby World Cup in 2015, first prize at the City of Derry International Choir Festival in 2018, and singing with Take That and Lulu in 2019. They have released two CDs and have previously toured the United States, Canada and Europe, as well as numerous performances in England and Wales. As well as their proficiency, the choir is known for being friendly and welcoming with social activities for members throughout the year – there are no auditions, with the only requirement being that members enjoy singing!

‘I struggle to imagine life these days without Côr CF1. It is a key part of my life which constantly introduces me to new friends and pushes me to learn evermore challenging choral pieces and dance-moves (yes, dance-moves!). I love being a part of Côr CF1 because of the opportunities it gives me and my fellow choristers to represent our Welsh culture and community all over the UK and across the world. Winning the Choir of the World Pavarotti Trophy this year after months singing with masks, was a special way to mark Côr CF1’s 20th anniversary.’

‘On Monday nights you’ll find me sitting by my favourite people, my fellow altos. Choir is such an important part of my mental health. Nobody coming to choir feeling down, comes out feeling the same. Singing with friends is the best therapy there is. CF1 has given me opportunities to sing all over Wales, the rest of the UK, and Europe too. Staying closer to home this year, we started 2022 travelling in masks to Côr Cymru and winning the mixed choir category, and it just got better from there. Winning the Pavarotti Trophy in the Llangollen sun, nothing beats that. Bring on the next 20 years.’
