We live in a time when historic inequalities are being confronted in classical music, as much as anywhere else. For the first time, young women can witness multiple female conductors excelling, raising their hopes of becoming conductors themselves.

When Jane Glover made her professional debut in 1975, it was wholly a man’s game. When she became Artistic Director of the London Mozart Players in 1984, such a role was unprecedented for a woman. None of this deterred her. Her steadfast artistry propelled her to conduct orchestras and operas worldwide, her passion for musical history enriched not only her performances but her books and broadcasts, and her care and generosity led her to become a cherished teacher and role-model to many others. Without ever seeking special recognition for it, she earnestly carved a path for women conductors, long before it became a movement. We are pleased to present this year’s Gamechanger Award to an inspiring and selfless exemplar: Jane Glover.
