2023: Gamechanger
supported by Signum Classics
In 1813, the Society was founded by a group of musicians who set out to establish a lasting performance culture and repertory, playing a central role in making the UK an essential destination for classical music. This award – first presented in 2019 – celebrates those who in unique and contemporary ways continue to break new ground in classical music. It is specially presented by the Board and Council of the RPS to an initiative, individual, group or organisation for their inspirational and transformative work. In 2023 we proudly presented this award to:
Anna Lapwood
Here is the full citation read by RPS Chief Executive James Murphy before presenting the trophy to Anna Lapwood:
'What makes a modern musician? First, of course, we look for remarkable talent. We see some of the best of humanity in those who devote themselves to music. Their pure artistry lifts all our perceptions of what humankind can do. All musicians are storytellers, and we value that now more than ever, seeking eloquent advocates who truly connect, communicating music’s worth and resonance through all life’s stress and noise.
Such qualities can take a lifetime to attain. Tonight we’re excited to present our Gamechanger Award to someone forging fresh avenues to such artistry whilst still in the fairly early days of their career. This year’s Gamechanger is someone changing the game before our very eyes.
At a time when so many young people might lose sight of the path to a life in music, she is lighting a way. To aspects of classical music that could all too easily be regarded as niche or elitist, she’s opening new doors and drawing us in. And the spirit with which she does it is infectious. Her curiosity about all music’s treasures awakens our own.
When she’s not performing in concert halls and churches nationwide, she’s building countless musical experiences for the community where she lives. She’s often out in the streets, captivating those who might never drift near classical music, and she’s traversing the terrain of social media with a confidence and luminosity we could all emulate. Millions are following her there.
Through all this pulses her constant pursuit of artistic excellence, genuine knowledge, and authentic appreciation of music. With that, and her grounded, relatable approach, she’s creating a new blueprint, inspiring generations of younger musicians to see how they too might rise up to meet the world. Her deeds remind us we all have scope to be gamechangers.'
