2021: Inspiration
Supported by Decca Classics
For a non-professional ensemble or an individual who works with such groups, in recognition of the remarkable constellation of such music-makers, often overlooked.
Hilary Campbell and Bristol Choral Society
‘The nation abounds with musical heroes. Second to none is conductor Hilary Campbell who kept Bristol Choral Society singing through the pandemic. She led stirring online renditions of choral works. She personally hosted a digital launch for the choir’s first CD, and she ran a Christmas carol commissioning competition, drawing hundreds of listeners online. Her spirit, athleticism and sheer joy are instantly, irresistibly apparent in the choir’s performances and recordings throughout the year.’
Also shortlisted:
- Aberdeenshire Saxophone Orchestra and Phoenix Saxophone Orchestra
- Aldworth Philharmonic Orchestra
- Orkney Winter Choir and Orkney Camerata
- South Wales Gay Men’s Chorus
- Themba Mvula and Lichfield Gospel Choir
For the very first time the winner of this RPS Award was fittingly chosen by the public. A shortlist of six exceptional entities was assembled by a panel who themselves work tirelessly year-round with non-professional groups and, from these, we invited the public to vote for whom they felt should receive this year’s award. The panel comprised:
Barbara Eifler - Chief Executive, Making Music
Deborah Keyser - Director, Tŷ Cerdd – Music Centre Wales
Helen Harrison - Music Director, Blackpool Symphony Orchestra
Jamie Njoku-Goodwin - Chief Executive, UK Music
Michael Bawtree - Music Director, Edinburgh Royal Choral Union / Glasgow Chamber Choir
We are very grateful to the 4,667 members of the public who then proceeded to cast their vote for one of the shortlisted nominees.
