Material Men

A new Southbank Centre commission for Shobana Jeyasingh Dance, with a score by the award winning Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin performed by the Smith Quartet, has been funded by the RPS Drummond Fund.

Material Men is a virtuoso piece for two dazzling performers, Sooraj Subramaniam and Shailesh Bahoran of the Indian diaspora, who contrast in style between classical and hip hop, in a dynamic exploration of rhythm, location and shared history. Material Men, choreographed by Shobana Jeyasingh, features a newly commissioned score by Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin, performed live by The Smith Quartet, including sound design by Leafcutter John.

Material Men was premiered at the Queen Elizabeth Hall (Southbank Centre) on 16 September 2015 before touring to Cheltenham, Brighton, Swansea and Aberyswyth.
