Abigail James

RPS Instrument Purchase Grant 2020 | £850 towards a violin bow

Violinist Abigail James was born in London in 2001 and started learning the violin aged 5. She was a member of numerous orchestras including the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain 2011 – 2015 and National Youth Chamber Orchestra 2015 – 2018 where she was co- leader.

Abigail was awarded a scholarship to study with Charles Sewart at The Purcell School for Young Musicians in 2017 where she attended several masterclasses and was a member of numerous orchestras and chamber groups including leading The Purcell School Symphony Orchestra at Cadogan Hall. She was subsequently awarded scholarships to Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she has completed her first year of study under the teaching of Simon Blendis.

Abigail has performed in numerous venues including a performance at Hammersmith Apollo as part of a UK tour with artists Freya Ridings and Jasmine Thompson in 2020. Awarded the John Willis shield in both 2018 and 2019, Abigail represented the charity Commonwealth Resounds by delivering a unique outreach programme in Antigua.

Aware of one’s wellbeing as both a sport and music scholar at her first senior school, Abigail dances at national standard and is a level 1 tennis coach.
