RPS Instrument Purchase Grant 2023 | £700 towards an oboe
Like many children Anna played recorder from a very young age, and when she was just five she picked up her mother’s oboe, successfully produced a succession of notes and became determined to make this her instrument. Formal lessons started in year 3, and five years later Anna passed her Grade 8 examination with distinction.
From 2016 to the end of 2018, she spent three happy years playing with the National Children’s Orchestra. During this time, Anna performed in venues including the Bridgewater Hall, Symphony Hall, and finally the Queen Elizabeth Hall, performing Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 with Nicola Benedetti.
Anna has been a member of the band for the National Youth Music Theatre since 2021, performing in full-scale productions of ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ in Manchester Cathedral in 2021 and ‘Ragtime’ in the MCT at Alleyn’s in 2022. In Summer 2023 she will play in a new musical, ‘The Boy Who Sailed the Ocean in an Armchair’.
Anna is currently in her second year of undergraduate study and holds a scholarship, supported by the Waverley Fund, at the Royal Northern College of Music. There she studies oboe and cor anglais with Jenny Galloway and Gillian Callow respectively.
