Isreal Akindipe

RPS Instrument Purchase Grant 2020 | £1,500 towards a clarinet

Clarinettist Isreal Akindipe - or ‘Ola’ as he is known - grew up in Lagos Nigeria to a non-musical family, but fell in love with music and decided to pursue his passion.

Following a workshop with double-bassist and Founder of Chineke!, Chi-Chi Nwanoku in Lagos, Ola was put in touch with clarinettist Katherine Spencer with whom he studied over the internet for two years. In 2017, he won the youth music competition, MusiQuest, and received the David Nwamara Award for woodwind performance the following year. Following an audition, Ola then gained a place at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance where he currently studies as a Trinity Laban-Chineke! Scholar.

Ola is the founder of the Nigerian Clarinet Hub and also an active member of the Chamber Music Society, Nigeria. He cares deeply about making the study of music more affordable and accessible in Nigeria, and hopes to increase the appreciation of classical music there and promote traditional Nigerian music to the world stage.
