RPS Instrument Purchase Grant 2021 | £1700 towards a contrabassoon
Bassoonist Liam Fleet is has just completed his first year at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire studying modern bassoon with Nikolaj Henriques, historical bassoon with Andy Watts and contrabassoon with Gareth Twigg.
Liam started studying the bassoon in 2010 with Quentin Haslam in Cheltenham, with whom he also developed a love for the contrabassoon. In 2016, he began playing Principal Bassoon in the Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra and contrabassoon in The Film Orchestra (Malvern). He enrolled at the Junior Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in 2017 to further his studies with Joanna Mayne, where he was Principal Bassoon of the Wind and Symphony Orchestras for the three years he studied there. Alongside this, he achieved GCSE and A-level Music at The Crypt School (Gloucester) and Marling Sixth Form (Stroud) respectively.
Liam also plays bassoon, oboe and recorder in The Greenwood Consort (Devon), a chamber ensemble focused on playing Baroque music on both modern and period instruments, and performed Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto with pianist Christopher Boodle in the Cheltenham Town Hall in February 2020. Liam has just accepted a bassoon place in the CBSO Youth Orchestra for the upcoming academic year.
