Maya Ross

RPS Instrument Purchase Grant 2021 | £600 towards a trumpet

Maya Ross is a second year undergraduate trumpeter at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, studying under Philippe Schartz, Section Principal Trumpet of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

She began her playing career on cornet, before quickly progressing to trumpet. At age 13, she was asked to represent her county in the Gwent Youth Brass Band and Wind Orchestra, playing with the service for many years. This allowed her to perform in a variety of prestigious concert halls such as St David’s Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Le Nouveau Siecle, the Royal Albert Hall and Carnegie Hall.

Notable performances include playing in the Music For Youth proms, and at Carnegie Hall with the Greater Gwent Youth Wind Orchestra as part of the New York International Music Festival 2017. She has appeared on S4C’s Band Cymru on two occasions: once as a winner of the show and more recently as a soloist. In 2018 she was scouted for the National Youth Brass Band of Wales on soprano cornet, and progressed to principal in 2019.

At RWCMD, she was awarded a scholarship from the Leverhulme Trust. Looking forward to future opportunities, she is grateful for the support from the RPS.
