Ophelia Buckton

RPS Instrument Purchase Grant 2021 | £750 towards a Bb trumpet

Ophelia Buckton has been playing the trumpet for over 10 years and is currently studying jazz at Leeds Conservatoire. She started her musical journey playing in brass bands and concert bands, and at age 17 she became principal cornet in the Burnham and Highbridge brass band, as well as playing first trumpet in the Somerset County Youth Concert Band, with whom she toured Amsterdam, playing at multiple venues throughout the city.

She is classically trained, passing her grade 8 with distinction in 2018, before exploring the world of jazz. She achieved Distinction* in her music course at Bridgwater College and was offered scholarships from both Leeds Conservatoire and Goldsmiths University.

She has worked professionally as a session musician for theatre
companies, as a dep for the Somerset County Orchestra, and before the pandemic she spent most weekends busking by herself and with friends in Somerset and Leeds. She has been employed several times as a bugle player to play the Last Post at the funerals of ex-military personnel, and she has taken part in many military marches in honour of Armed Forces Day and Remembrance Day.
