Sophia Matviienko

RPS Instrument Purchase Grant 2021 | £750 towards a flute

Sofiia Matviienko was born in the small town of Pereshchepino in central Ukraine. She started studying recorder at the age of 5 due to speech problems and found that this is what she likes and wants to do. From the age of 9, Sofiia switched to the classical flute and moved to Poltava to study at a music school, where she graduated from the Poltava Academy of Arts with honors. She used the internet to further develop her knowledge and skills; watching master classes on YouTube and filmed lessons from famous musicians.

Sofiia often takes part in international flute competitions and summer flute schools in order to develop her knowledge and meet fantastic flute players. She has won many competitions and participated in international festivals in Argentina, Germany, Ukraine, Italy, Bosnia, UK and other countries. In 2016 she played her first solo concert in Italy and recorded it on CD. The young flutist is happy to take part in charity events, for example, at the annual concert of St. Nicholas for children in Poltava, Ukraine.

In 2017, Sofiia auditioned and received a full scholarship to study at Purcells School for Young Musicians in the UK, where she graduated with honors in 2020. Also, in 2020 she started studying in the Royal Academy of Music with the legendary flutist - William Bennett, thanks to the generous ABRSM scholarship. Additionally, since 2021 Sofiia became an artist for a LefreQue product. In previous years, Sofiia was supported by Rotary Club Dusseldorf-Schlostrum, Yamaha Scholarship Program, VERE MUSIC FUND.
