Barbara Matos

RPS Instrument Purchase Grant 2019 | £800 towards a Classical Guitar

Barbara Matos was born in Portugal in 1999. From a young age she was encouraged to play an instrument by her family and at age 8 she started studying the classical guitar at the music academy of her hometown, Viana do Castelo. Her guitar studies continued over the years, under the tutelage of different teachers and schools. Early on, she decided that she wanted to be a professional musician, which led her to audition, in 2016, for the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. She was accepted and is now about to begin her third year studying with Graham Anthony Devine.

Throughout her studies in London, Barbara has taken part in masterclasses with renowned guitarists such as Xuefei Yang, Augustin Wiedemann, William Carter, Vincent Lindsey-Clark and Fiona Harrison and performed twice at the Royal Greenwich Guitar Festival, where she had the pleasure of attending concerts and masterclasses by Roberto Aussel, Ali Arango and Marcin Dylla among others.

Barbara is currently a member of various chamber groups, including a guitar quartet with whom she performs frequently around London. In 2018, she participated in the Alison Stephens’ competition, organized by Trinity Laban, where she won the first prize and in 2019, she was awarded an Instrument Purchase Grant by the Royal Philharmonic Society.
