Louise Hayden

2018 RPS Instrument Purchase Grant | Bassoon

My name is Louise Hayden. I am bassoonist from Luton in Bedfordshire. I began to have lessons on the Tenoroon at Bushmead Primary School when I was 9. My love of the bassoon was nurtured in me by my first teacher, Kathy Hills, who sadly is no longer with us, but will always be in my thoughts.

As I moved on to the bassoon I joined the Luton Youth Orchestra and Luton Youth Concert band, with whom I played right up until I left to begin my studies at Trinity Laban. I have also played for the Bedfordshire Youth Orchestra on a number of occasions and was invited to play with the Cambridgeshire Youth Orchestra when they had a partnership program with the RPO, playing at the Cambridge Corn Exchange.

Since joining Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance I have had many opportunities to progress as a musician, playing in numerous ensemble groups and supporting my fellow students in their assessments. I have had opportunities to play Contrabassoon and am hoping to improve my fluency on Flute during the forthcoming year.

I am so grateful for the support of the RPS as this grant will allow me to upgrade from my Academy bassoon onto my first professional standard bassoon.
