RPS Instrument Purchase Grant 2019 | £1,000 towards a French Horn
Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Matthew Sayers is a second-year Bachelors of Music student at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) and studies with David Flack, former principal Horn of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He was awarded the Charles Gault Family Award for Brass in 2018.
Before coming to Glasgow, Matthew studied with Martin Wall, Principal 2nd Horn Player in the Ulster Orchestra. He has appeared with groups such as the Ulster Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, City of Belfast Youth Orchestra, City of Belfast Concert Band and Ulster Youth Orchestra touring Europe, including Vienna, Amsterdam, Prague, Spain, Portugal and Salzburg. He has performed with world renowned musicians the likes of Frank Lloyd, Michael McHale and Patrick Rafter. Recently he is developing an interest in conducting and took part in a masterclass with Tung Chieh Chuang at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
During his first year at the RCS Matthew took masterclasses with Frank Lloyd, Fergus McWilliam of the Berlin Philharmonic and Stockholm Chamber Brass. He has also taken part in classes with Paul Klein of the Ulster Orchestra and Stephen Stirling of the London Symphonia.
