Megan Swift

2018 RPS Instrument Purchase Grant | Flute

Flautist Megan Swift currently studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with Jonathan Burgess.

She began her musical education in South Yorkshire at the age of 8 after seeing a flautist (who became her first teacher) perform at her school. She went on to study with Helen Ingham of the Real Music Centre, and doubled on the flute and saxophone in the pit orchestra for RMC’s musical theatre shows. Megan also competed in the Barnsley Co-operative Music festival, winning awards both as a soloist and in ensembles. She was the recipient of the Earnest Frost Memorial Prize for the most promising instrumentalist in the 2017 competition.

A member of the Sheffield Youth Orchestra, conducted by George Morton, Megan rehearsed and performed orchestral music regularly, developing her love for playing in large ensembles. This has further inspired her to pursue a career as an orchestral player and soloist.

In her first year at RWCMD Megan has enjoyed many successes in solo and ensemble work, including her ensemble being nominated for the College’s McGrenery Chamber Music Prize and the Wind Ensemble competition. She takes every opportunity to work with composers, playing and recording new music; experimenting with different performance platforms and kinds of flute.

She looks forward to seeing what her musical journey will bring, and is grateful to the RPS for its generous support.
