Mina Middleton

2017 RPS Instrument Purchase Grant recipient


Mina Middleton began playing the flute at the age of 9 before being recommended by her teacher Fiona Slominska to audition for Chetham's School of Music. She was successful and started in September 2011. There she studied with Belinda Gough, Laura Jellicoe and Katherine Bryan. She was very fortunate to have taken part in master classes with many eminent flautists including Emily Beynon, Andrea Oliva, Robert Winn, Adam Walker, Samuel Coles, Gareth Davies, Michael Cox and Gitte Marcussen. Whilst at Chetham’s, Mina also studied piano as a second study with Marta Karbownicka andachieved grade 8 on this instrument in March 2016.

Mina performed in a variety of concerts during her time at Chetham's. Significant solo engagements include a lunchtime recital for the Oundle International Festival 2014 and the Leeds 2015 International Concert Season. Mina was invited to perform with her guitar partner in Ischia, Italy as part of the Sir William Walton Autumn concert series of 2014 and with the same duet, played to renowned guitarist, Edoardo Catemario. She also had the opportunity to perform in a wind quintet alongside woodwind players from the Hallé in a 'Chetham's meets Hallé' collaboration concert in January 2016. Mina played regularly with the Chetham's Symphony Orchestra and it was with this orchestra that she made her concerto debut, playing Nielsen's flute concerto at The Bridgewater Hall under Ilyich Rivas in July 2016.

As a member of the National Youth Orchestra in 2014 and 2015, Minaenjoyed performing in major venues around the country such as Leeds Town Hall, the Barbican, Royal Festival Hall, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Snape Maltings and the Sage Gateshead. She also performed at the Konzerthaus in Berlin for the Young Euro Classic festival of 2015 and performing with the NYO in live and televised broadcasts at the 2014 and 2015 BBC Proms.

Mina is currently enrolled on the BMus course at the Royal Academy of Music, studying flute with Kate Hill and piccolo with Helen Keen.
