Dartington Music Summer School
Owing to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, we are sorry to announce that Dartington Music is no longer running the Advanced Conducting Course this summer. We hope to revisit these plans with them in the future.
For the first time, we are pleased to partner with Dartington Music Summer School as Alice Farnham co-leads their renowned conducting course.
This year, the Advanced Conducting Course is especially for female conductors. The two-week, immersive course offers expert teaching from acclaimed conductors Alice Farnham and David Jones, and extensive podium time with the Dartington Festival Orchestra.
What does it involve?
The course will run from 8-22 August 2020 at the beautiful medieval Dartington Hall Estate in Devon. Teaching includes coaching on orchestral and choral conducting, in repertoire ranging from classical to contemporary. Participants may also benefit from a superb series of concerts and events featuring outstanding artists who come specially to Dartington to perform. During their stay, they are sure to meet like-minded musicians from all walks of life, and make long-lasting musical friendships.
In the first week, the entire Summer School celebrates Beethoven's 250th anniversary, dedicating all programming to the composer. David Jones will work with students towards a public concert of of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 and Violin Concerto (with Thomas Gould as soloist), and Brett Dean’s Beethoven-inspired Testament. Students will also work on choral conducting with Alice Farnham and the Chamber Choir.
In the second week, Alice Farnham will focus on helping students develop a rich string sound in works by Tchaikovsky, Elgar, Imogen Holst, and a new piece by Cecilia McDowall commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society for the Women Conductors programme.

Who can apply?
Dartington states that this course is specifically designed for 'advanced musicians pursuing a career in music'.
How can I apply?
The course entails a fee, but generous bursaries are available from Dartington to help cover the costs of tuition, accommodation and catering. Most participants book a Courses and Concerts Pass which gives you full access to the programme for your chosen week. For a two-week Pass, it's £920 but, depending on your financial situation, this can be reduced to a lesser contribution.
As well as the Advanced Conducting Course, the Pass grants you access to all the Wellbeing and Open Space activities, and the concerts at Dartington Festival. You can make your own arrangements to stay off-site, or benefit from the full 'Dartington experience' by booking from a range of accommodation.
