Constança Simas

About Constança

I started conducting with the Bachelor of Orchestral Conducting course in Lisbon (2013), and what amazed me about it were the infinite possibilities of interpretation and understanding of orchestral music. As I developed I noticed that my love for music had more to do with the empathy and vulnerability of getting an orchestra together to achieve a cohesive vision, creating music that is vibrant and alive. Growing up in Portugal I also felt that it was important to create new ways to reach diverse audiences. That is why during my time studying in the MMus of orchestral conducting at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, I’ve produced shows that attempt to connect with everyone, and not only the customary concert hall audiences. In Portugal I have worked on projects that share this mission, such as the "Pocket Orchestra Marathons" with Orquestra sem Fronteiras that takes music to the interior regions of the country where cultural activities are scarce.

In 2023, I'm conducting the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (NYOGB) and NYO Inspire at their Spring and Summer residencies. I also have my debut with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Orquestra do Norte, and Orquestra Clássica do Sul. I'm the conductor and coordinator of the Zohra Orchestra for 2023/2024, where I'm also responsible for mentoring young Afghan women in orchestral conducting.

Last season I made my debut with the Southbank Sinfonia and Orquestra Clássica do Centro, and I was assistant conductor for several performances with BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Welsh National Opera, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, and Orquestra sem Fronteiras. In Teatro Tivoli (Porto), I was musical director for Lugar Comum, an opera addressing the theme of domestic violence, composed by Sofia Sousa Rocha and premiered by Quarteto Contratempus in November 2022.
