Tess Jackson
I grew up in Germany, playing violin and piano, but soon discovered a passion for conducting and for sharing music with as many people as possible!
During my undergraduate degree at Cambridge University, I was Principal Conductor of the Cambridge University Sinfonia and the Cambridge Graduate Orchestra. As Conducting Scholar for the Cambridge University Musical Society, I also got the chance to assist conductors such as Jac van Steen and Andrew Gourlay.
I am currently Associate Conductor of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, and Assistant Conductor at Volksoper Wien. This season I am working on a whole range of opera productions including Bernstein’s West Side Story, Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary, and an original production, Lass uns die Welt vergessen, exploring the political reality in Vienna and around the Volksoper in the early months of 1938. Last season, I made my debut with Garsington Opera and the Philharmonia, stepping in at short notice to conduct the OperaFirst performance of Smetana’s The Bartered Bride. I assisted Jac van Steen on the same production, and previously assisted Trevor Pinnock in the Royal Academy Opera’s production of The Rake’s Progress. I have also assisted both the BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and have worked with the London Chamber Orchestra.
I recently graduated from the Royal Academy of Music, where I studied with Sian Edwards, before which I read music at the University of Cambridge. In 2023, I was honoured to be featured in ClassicFM’s Rising Stars of 2023 list.
