Harry Lovell-Jones

2016 RPS Instrument Purchase Grant recipient


Harry Lovell-Jones is currently in his first year on a scholarship to the world-renowned Royal Academy of Music in London where he is studying percussion. He studies percussion with London Philharmonic Orchestra player Andy Barclay and timpani with Bill Lockhart of English National Opera. Since starting his studies in London Harry has been playing with the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, which is made up of young players aged 18-25 and various Academy ensembles.

Prior to this Harry attended Ysgol Gyfun Cymraeg Glantaf where he took A levels in Music, French and English. Harry was a member of the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain and then the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain with whom he became principal percussionist. With these orchestras Harry has performed in most of the major concert halls in Britain including live broadcast concerts from the summer Prom series at the Royal Albert Hall.

He has also led many workshops for National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain helping younger aspiring players to know what it is like to play in a large symphony orchestra. Harry and his brother Charlie have twice been invited to play as a duo at the Schools Prom concerts, also at the Royal Albert Hall. The first time was as piano duettists the second with violin and marimba having been selected from hundreds of groups from across the Great Britain. Their duo has also twice won the Urdd Eisteddfod Instrumental Duet competition. Harry is also a keen footballer and plays in the Thames league and the Welsh league.
