Awarded: a grant of £20,000 towards suties at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
Since 2013, Tom was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (NYO) and in 2015, gained the position of Principal Percussionist until finishing his time there in 2016. Throughout his time there, Tom was given the opportunity to play in some of the top concert halls in the country such as the Birmingham Symphony and the Barbican as well as annual appearances on TV at the BBC Proms. In the summer of 2015, he had the honour of playing at the Konzerthaus in Berlin as part of a Young Persons Orchestra Festival.
Professionally, Tom has worked with the Orchestra of Opera North and the BBC Philharmonic on projects, recordings and concerts including the BBC Ten Pieces 2.
Alongside NYO and on a more regular basis, Tom played with the City of Leeds Youth Orchestra. In the summer of 2016, Tom played Sejourne’s Marimba Concerto with this orchestra in the UK as well as on tour at the Slovak Radio Hall in Bratislava.
As well performing as a soloist in recitals and local competitions, Tom has also performed in the percussion category final of BBC Young Musician 2016.
Currently, Tom studies at the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam, where he is taught percussion and timpani by members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra as well as regular marimba lessons with renowned marimba player, Rachel Xi Zhang.
As well as this, Tom has also had consultation lessons and masterclasses with acclaimed percussionists and timpanists such as Graham Johns, Alexej Gerassimez, Marinus Komst, Chris Ridley, Colin Currie and members of the LSO percussion section. After entering in 2013, Tom is again attending the LSO Percussion Academy 2017 this summer.
