2017 RPS Instrument Purchase Grant recipient
Aaron Akugbo is a trumpet student at the Royal Academy of Music who has just completed his first year of the undergraduate course under the teaching of head of brass, Mark David. Before his time at the Academy, Aaron was a student at St. Mary's Music School for nine years studying with trumpet teacher and university professor, Bede Williams. During his time at St. Mary's, Aaron was a member of the school's brass ensemble and orchestra before becoming members of both the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain; in his second year in NYOGB, Aaron was appointed as principal trumpet. During his time as a school student, Aaron competed in the Edinburgh Competition Festival winning their top wind and brass recital prize two years running (2015-2016). Aaron has received both lessons and masterclass from many trumpet players: Urban Agnas, Reinhold Friedrich, Jeroen Berwaerts, Gabor Tarkovi, Guillaume Jehl and Eric Aubier. At the Academy, Aaron also studies the baroque trumpet with teacher John Hutchins. As an orchestral player, Aaron is currently a member of the Chineke! orchestra based in London playing alongside MET opera principal Billy Hunter.
