The RPS has made a series of grants totaling £36,500 to 20 young composers and performers. Five new works have been commissioned from young composers for prestigious performances in 2013, and 15 young musicians have received grants towards the purchase of new instruments.

John Stephens has been made an Honorary Member of the Royal Philharmonic Society in recognition of his outstanding services to music education. A rare honor, the award has only been presented 130 times since the first honorary membership was made to Carl Maria von Weber in 1826.

Encore is a collaboration between the Royal Philharmonic Society and BBC Radio 3 designed to give repeat performances and broadcasts of works by living British Composers which otherwise might be lost from view.

The Philharmonia Orchestra’s Music of Today Series and the Cheltenham Festival present new works commissioned by the RPS.

Renowned tenor Philip Langridge was a staunch member and Council member of the Royal Philharmonic Society until his untimely death in March this year. Endlessly positive and energetic, and passionate about communication through performance, he often spoke about what the RPS could do to extend its support for musicians entering the profession.

The winners of this year’s Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards, the UK’s most prestigious accolade for live classical music, were announced on 8 May 2012 at the Dorchester Hotel, London.

Choirmaster and broadcaster Gareth Malone was the speaker at classical music’s big night out.
