Help us celebrate music's champions

06 Dec 2018

As far back as 1826, when it first awarded Honorary Membership, the Royal Philharmonic Society has continually celebrated those who achieve remarkable feats in music.

At this time of year, we welcome nominations for three very significant awards. If you are a Member of the RPS or work in the music profession, you are warmly invited to nominate someone for each of the following:

RPS Gold Medal – our highest honour is awarded for the most outstanding musicianship, and is presented to the finest musicians of any nationality. First presented in 1870 on Beethoven’s centenary, its recipients have included Brahms, Elgar, Stravinsky, Bernstein, Kathleen Ferrier, Dame Janet Baker, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Antonio Pappano, Sir Simon Rattle and most recently Jessye Norman.

RPS Honorary Membership – is granted in recognition of outstanding services to music, and recipients have included composers, conductors, performers, commentators, programmers, publishers and educationalists. The first recipient in 1826 was Carl Maria von Weber, and recently honorees have included conductor Marin Alsop, composer Sir George Benjamin and pianist Stephen Hough.

RPS Leslie Boosey Award – named after one of the great music publishers, this award is presented, not to composers or performers, but to someone who has worked tirelessly ‘backstage’ to champion new music. Across the years, winners have included publishers, programmers, broadcasters and administrators. Like the award’s dedicatee, each has done remarkable work to promote and create opportunities for contemporary composers.

To nominate someone for any of these accolades, please send an email to Robin Sheffield, General Manager with details of your nominee and a citation of 300 – 500 words outlining why you believe they deserve such recognition. This will then be considered by a panel comprising RPS Trustees and Council members with significant roles in the profession.

The closing date for nominations is midday on Tuesday 8 January 2019.
