A Royal Philharmonic Society/Susan Bradshaw Composers’ Fund commission by Lauri Supponen is one of four world premieres performed tonight by the BBC Singers. The programme, which celebrates age and experience (the combined age of Harvey, Rautavaara, Tavener and Wood alone is over 300!) features birthday tributes to Hugh Wood at 80 and Judith Bingham at 60, and – with Sanskrit Buddhist prayer, Senegalese song and Tibetan mysticism – a definite nod towards the British Musical Explorers focus of this year's Cheltenham Festival. A new Mass by celebrated Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara, rounds off this concert of contemporary choral riches.
There will be a pre-concert talk at 19.00 with Christopher Cook and a selection of composers from this concert. This event is free to ticket holders of the 20.00 concert.
