At the RPS, we’re especially proud to be co-commissioning a major new orchestral work this month with BBC Radio 3, made possible with support from the John Ellerman Foundation.
Ninfea Cruttwell-Reade is a name worth knowing whose music is so worth hearing. We first met Ninfea in 2016 when she was part of what we today call the RPS Composers programme, and the RPS granted her a commission to write Raven’s Cage, a work for oboe and piano premiered at the Presteigne Festival. Her career since has led to some fantastic music and striking collaborations. This year, we are set to shine a greater light on Ninfea and her music as a new RPS Featured Composer. Here on our website and our social media, we will share and amplify Ninfea’s story, her music, and her life as a composer through films, playlists and interviews, encouraging audiences and programmers to discover a real talent.
On Friday 21 February 2025, soloist Clare Hammond, conductor Emilia Hoving, and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales give the world premiere of Ninfea’s new Piano Concerto at Hoddinott Hall at the Wales Millennium Centre, set to be recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Entitled ‘Grace’, the programme also features the UK premiere of Cecilia Darmström’s ICE and Grace Williams’ exhilarating Symphony No.1.
Clare Hammond is also no stranger to the RPS, having received the RPS Young Artist Award in 2016, and last year given the premiere of RPS Composer Sun Keting’s solo work Us, the most fleeting of all at Cheltenham Music Festival.
