A note from George

I am very grateful to have been awarded the RPS Isserlis Scholarship, which will help hugely in supporting my exchange term studying abroad at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. Copenhagen is a very beautiful and vibrant city with a thriving music culture that I look forward to being immersed in as a musician and audience member. 

Having completed my first two years at the Royal College of Music (RCM) I am very excited to study in a whole new environment and institution for a term. I very much look forward to learning from the excellent brass department in Copenhagen, including trombonist and Head of Brass Jesper Juul Windahl, and aim to gain as much knowledge and experience as possible from them to take back to the UK with me. I am also interested in learning how playing styles and musicality differs in another country, and hope that experiencing this will make me a more versatile and resilient musician for the future, opening more doors to find work across Europe. 

I will return to RCM in January and believe my term away will change my playing and perspective greatly. I am very thankful to all the Members of RPS for supporting the opportunity!

Biography

George Winter is a trombonist currently studying at the Royal College of Music in London with Rupert Whitehead and Byron Fulcher. He first began playing at the age of nine in Llangollen Silver Band and has since been part of Foden's Youth Band and National Youth Brass Band as Principal Trombone.

At the age of 16, George joined Wells Cathedral School as part of the specialist music programme, gaining more experience in orchestral, jazz and chamber music. Since joining RCM George has been part of a wide range of projects, from playing in the opera orchestra to being part of brass band and jazz orchestra projects. George also enjoys being involved in student orchestras, and his freelance work across London and the surrounding areas.
