Cello – A Journey through Silence to Sound

Sun 29 Sep 2024, 3:00pm - 4:00pm

Wigmore Hall, London

A unique event celebrating the cello, set to feature the world premiere of a new RPS commission.

Featuring cellist Natalie Clein, composer Cheryl Frances-Hoad, and author Kate Kennedy (pictured above), the event coincides with the publication of Kate’s new book Cello – A Journey Through Silence to Sound (published by Bloomsbury). Directed by Tom Morris (War Horse), the event will blend Bach’s Cello Suite No.2 with spoken word and visuals, and the first performance of a new Suite for Solo Cello written especially by Cheryl for Natalie. We are grateful to an anonymous donor for their support in making this commission possible.

Kate’s book examines the relationship between cellists and their instruments, exploring stories of creation, loss, and rediscovery. She traces the lives of notable cellists such as Pal Hermann and Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, whilst sharing her own adventures, from playing a cello-turned-beehive to creating a new hybrid cello for youth orchestras in Uruguay. The hour-long performance will be following be a complimentary drinks reception in Wigmore Hall’s Learning Room.

Tickets are £18 (£16 concessions) and available from Wigmore Hall website.
