As part of the 2023 RPS Composers programme, Soosan Lolavar was commissioned to write this piece for Cheltenham Music Festival. Following the premiere in July 2023, The Carice Singers will perform Soosan's work, The World is the Active String, at St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, on 22 September as part of their concert, 'A Prayer of Peace and Light'.

Soosan explores diaspora, hybridity and the boundaries between Iranian and western musical traditions in her work. She explores the dislocations that many people feel, and that she herself has felt as a British-Iranian woman. She describes her influences as 'very old or very new'.
