Zygmund de Somogyi - RPS Composer Premiere

Sat 19 Apr 2025, 1:00pm - 2:00pm

Wigmore Hall, 36 Wigmore St, London W1U 2BP

New work by 2025 RPS Composer Zygmund de Somogyi, commissioned by the RPS, will frame a programme of 'Music for the Quarter-Life Crisis' at Wigmore Hall.

Zygmund is a British-Filipino composer, interdisciplinary artist, and writer. Their music incorporates eclectic influences from punk rock, experimental electronic music, immersive theatre, and video games, alongside classical and contemporary music canons. You can read more about Zygmund and their work on our website here.

'Music for the Quarter-Life Crisis', a concert co-curated for Wigmore Hall Learning alongside flute, cello and piano trio Temporal Harmonies Inc, is a 'celebration, exploration, and snapshot of hope(lessness) themed around a ‘quarter-life crisis’, which seemed to fit with the first quarter of the new century.'

Zygmund's two pieces, framing a programme of Lowell Liebermann, Caroline Shaw, Kaija Saariaho, and Ashkan Layegh are intrinsically linked despite their stylistic opposition. The concert opener – music for the quarter-life crisis (synth étude) – is styled as a tongue-in-cheek indie pop song; while IN THE EVENT THAT YOU STAY lurches from dissonant modernism to emotionally-charged romanticism.

Zygmund is one of eight individuals we have supported through the 2025 RPS Composers programme, giving each a commission and premiere with a noted ensemble, festival or venue, as well as a year of professional development which gives them the chance to meet industry experts and professional composers, furthering their confidence and skills to seek further commissions and premieres of their own. We're grateful to RPS Members and a range of trusts and foundations whose generous support makes the RPS Composers programme possible.
