Amelia Clarkson

Amelia is one of eight composers selected for a place on the 2026 RPS Composers programme. This will culminate in her writing a new piece, commissioned by the RPS, for Hebrides Ensemble.

On this page, Amelia introduces herself in her own words, and shares links to her music, her website, and her social media platforms. We warmly invite programmers and commissioners to take a closer look at Amelia's work, and please be in touch with us if you would like to connect with her.

About Amelia

'I’m a Northern Irish composer from County Down. My music is deeply shaped by movement, moving fluidly between the concert hall and the stage. I’m drawn to the point where fragility and strength coexist, and I’m endlessly grateful for the language composing has given me and the places my work has taken me.

Working with the Ulster Orchestra has become a defining recent chapter. Following the premiere of The Rain Keeps Coming in 2025, we have since recorded my debut orchestral album together for release on Delphian Records in 2027.

Other recent highlights include composing for National Symphony Orchestra Ireland, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Dutch National Ballet, Hard Rain SoloistEnsemble, Crash Ensemble, Talland Quartet and The Marian Consort. Upcoming projects include my second work for National Symphony Orchestra Ireland, Porcelain, and an opera based on Oscar Wilde’s De Profundis.

I’m deeply energised by the role of music in new dance. I’m currently completing my PhD at the Royal Northern College of Music, exploring how composing for dance has fundamentally re-orientated my orchestral writing. In 2023, I co-founded Belfast’s Six Dance Collective, where we have since created the city’s first new ballet and brought dance back to local stages through collaborative, process-led work.'
