Alice Farnham

Alice Farnham is an acclaimed professional conductor and the founder and Artistic Director of RPS Conductors.

She has been described by The Guardian as 'one of Britain's foremost conductors' and The Daily Telegraph has commended her for 'doing more than anyone to change the face of conducting in the UK’. BBC Radio 4’s flagship show Woman’s Hour placed her on its 2018 Power List of 40 women making a difference internationally in music. She is also ranked by both Classic FM and BBC Music Magazine as being among the top women conductors working today.

She is one of the world’s foremost advocates and activists for empowering underrepresented talents to conduct, and was duly invited to lead the National Concert Hall’s Female Conductor Programme in Ireland, coach participants at Dallas Opera’s Institute for Women Conductors, and be Artistic Advisor of Perth Symphony Orchestra’s Women on the Podium.

In 2023, Faber published Alice's book In Good Hands: The Making of A Modern Conductor which accounts her life in conducting so far, including all her endeavours addressing inequality in conducting, and uniquely draws on the insights and testimonies of a host of other renowned conductors worldwide.

Alice trained at the St Petersburg Conservatoire with Ilya Musin. 

Guest conducting includes the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, BBC Concert Orchestra, Jönköping Sinfonietta, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, The Royal Ballet and Opera, Opéra de Rouen Normandie, Malmö Opera, Mariinsky Theatre, Calgary Opara, Folkoperan Stockholm, Longborough Festival Opera, and Wermlands Opera.

She has been a Guest Conductor with many ballet companies including Birmingham Royal Ballet, Danish Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Rambert Dance, Skåna Dansteater, and Ballet Preljocaj.

Other recent engagements include the Malmö Opera Orchestra, Dalasinfonietta, Gävle Symphony Orchestra, Nordiska Kammarorkester, Malta Philharmonic, Sinfonia Viva, and Southbank Sinfonia. 

Alice is passionate about training young singers and instrumentalists and recent productions include the Royal Academy of Music, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.  She was Music Director of Welsh National Youth Opera for the critically acclaimed and award-winning productions of Maxwell-Davies' Kommilitonen!, Britten's Paul Bunyan, and Shostakovich's Cheryomushki! 

Alice was Organ Scholar at St. Hugh's Oxford University and Organ Fellow at St. Thomas’ Church Fifth Avenue, New York.
