FiveBy5
RPS Philip Jones Brass Prize | £2,500
Formed in October 2022 when all five members began their studies at the Royal Academy of Music, FiveBy5 began as an exploration of what a trumpet quintet could achieve. Three years on, the ensemble has become a defining part of each member’s artistry, driving their shared mission to innovate within brass chamber music. Programming original music, new arrangements, and repertoire from their Swedish, Ukrainian, and UK roots, FiveBy5 have performed extensively in the UK and abroad. Key recent performances include the Philip Jones Brass Spectacular at Sinfonia Smith Square, their international debut in Stockholm, and residency tours at Ferrandou Musique in France. FiveBy5 won the 2025 Musicians’ Company Brass Ensemble Prize, having previously been awarded second place in both 2023 and 2024. FiveBy5 are dedicated to expanding the original repertoire for trumpet quintets – they have performed the premieres of two new works by Royal Academy of Music composer Archie John, and are looking forward to the premiere of an upcoming commission from Britta Byström funded by Radio Sweden.
Fiveby5 write:
‘We are incredibly grateful to the RPS for this award, which will enable us to fund a trip to Sweden in early 2026. We’ll work closely with Swedish composer Britta Byström and perform the premiere of the new piece she has written for us. We intend to perform at multiple different venues in Stockholm, including a return to the Queen Silvia Concert Hall, where we have previously performed in 2024. We hope this project will encourage other composers to think about writing music for our ensemble of five trumpets, as we look to continue expanding the original repertoire for trumpet quintet. This will also be a fantastic opportunity for us to move to a more project-based way of working, which is our aim for the future of our ensemble once we finish our studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London. We are so pleased to have been awarded the RPS Philip Jones Brass Prize, and look forward to our association with this wonderful organisation.’
