Emily Porter joined the Royal Philharmonic Society in September 2024 as Administrator. Before joining RPS, Emily studied Music at the University of Cambridge, followed by an Masters in Ethnomusicology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, particularly focusing on the links between music and the natural world.
Emily grew up in the Peak District, where she was introduced to classical music through Peak District Music Centres, and Derbyshire and Sheffield Youth Orchestras. At university, she enjoyed both playing in and organising concerts and recitals. A firm believer that music is for all who love it, these concerts included outreach, bringing classical music to primary age children, and the Minerva Festival, which foregrounds the work of marginalised gender composers.
Emily is a flautist (who sometimes tries to play the bassoon), and is always excited to learn more about music – this year she has been learning the Japanese Shakuhachi flute.
