Edward Mascall-Robson

Edward is one of eight composers selected for a place on the 2027 RPS Composers programme. This will culminate in him writing a new piece, commissioned by the RPS, for Onyx Brass.

On this page, Edward introduces himself in his own words, and shares links to his music, his website, and his social media platforms. We warmly invite programmers and commissioners to take a closer look at Edward's work, and please be in touch with us if you would like to connect with him.

About Edward

'I am a Japanese-British composer and koto performer, currently based in London. My musical education began with traditional Japanese music, studying the koto with Curtis Patterson and as part of the Sawai School. The School’s focus lay not in the older classical tradition but in modern koto music, and being exposed to this repertoire gave me an early and lasting curiosity about how the instrument could be pushed into different directions. This interest still runs through my own writing, where the koto and other traditional Japanese instruments or voice sit in combination with Western instruments.

I studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music with David Sawer, before continuing at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris in Gérard Pesson's composition class. Whilst at the Paris Conservatoire, I also studied electroacoustic composition with Yan Maresz, Luis Naón, and Grégoire Lorieux. I have been very fortunate to work with, or have upcoming work with, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre des Lauréats du Conservatoire de Paris, United Instruments of Lucilin, Nemø Ensemble, AsianArt Ensemble, SOEMON, Quatuor Ardeo, Rubik Quartet, Ryoko Aoki, Reison Kuroda and Naoko Kikuchi, among others.'
