About Amelia

‘I am a Northern Irish composer from County Down, and my music moves between the concert hall and the stage. I often turn to nature, literature and mythology as lenses through which to explore contemporary issues, searching for a soundworld where fragility and beauty meet.

I discovered composing after leaving home to study music, and am forever grateful for the language it has given me to share moments with audiences, and the places my work has taken me. My practice is hugely shaped by movement, and I am deeply passionate about the role of music in new dance. In 2023, I co-founded Belfast’s Six Dance Collective, and have since created the city’s first ballet, bringing dance back to local stages. Another major highlight has been writing for the Dutch National Ballet.

While dance influences all my work, beyond the stage I have been privileged to compose for Hard Rain SoloistEnsemble, Crash Ensemble, Opera Holland Park, and national orchestras. Collaborating with choreographers, dancers and theatre artists continues to shape how I think about sound and structure, and I am working towards my PhD at the Royal Northern College of Music, reflecting on how the impact of composing for dance has re-orientated my wider musical voice.'
