George Stevenson
George is one of eight composers selected for a place on the 2026 RPS Composers programme. This will culminate in him writing a new piece, commissioned by the RPS, for Ensemble 10:10.
On this page, George introduces himself in his own words, and shares links to his music, his website, and his social media platforms. We warmly invite programmers and commissioners to take a closer look at George's work, and please be in touch with us if you would like to connect with him.
About George
'My musical life began as a jazz pianist, performing around Scotland. Ultimately I realised that the jazz I was most drawn to channelled the harmonic language of composers like Debussy, Messiaen and Dutilleux. This began the journey of discovery in 20th and 21st-century classical music which has brought my music to where it is today.
I studied with Julian Anderson and Joseph Phibbs, and completed a Master's degree at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I also received an Advanced Diploma in Composition from Moscow Conservatoire, studying with Alexander Tchaikovsky.
I have been fortunate to work with musicians of the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, Psappha Ensemble, Berkeley Ensemble and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group NEXT, as well as dancers of the Bolshoi Ballet.
Improvisation remains at the core of my music, driven by the pure excitement of seeking out harmonic objects and musical structures that are new and fascinating to me.'
