Dorothy Khadem-Missagh
I am a conductor from Austria and have worked with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Moravian Philharmonic, Tonkünstler Orchestra, Seoul Seongnam Philharmonic and my own Beethoven Frühling Festival-Orchestra. I founded the orchestra for my Beethoven Spring Festival, to develop new ideas on a larger canvas and reach younger audiences. A signature project is Pastorale – World.Natural.Heritage, which blends Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony with award-winning photography for an immersive concert experience.
I have performed in venues such as the Musikverein Vienna, Wiener Konzerthaus and Philharmonie Luxembourg, collaborating with soloists such as Kerson Leong and Hayoung Choi.
Growing up in a Viennese musical family steeped in orchestra life, I never saw a woman on the podium, which made conducting seem out of reach. I pursued piano studies, debuting as a soloist in the Golden Hall of Musikverein Vienna at age 17. Touring internationally, including festivals such as Verbier and Styriarte, I performed as soloist and chamber musician – among others with my piano trio Trio Vision alongside members of the Vienna Philharmonic. Competition milestones include multiple prizes at the International Beethoven Competition Bonn and New York International Piano Competition.
I recently chose to commit fully to conducting, completing studies at the Royal Academy of Music with Sian Edwards and in masterclasses with Jorma Panula, Edward Gardner, Sir Mark Elder, Vimbayi Kaziboni and Dame Jane Glover. I have also recently assisted Barbara Hannigan and Trevor Pinnock.
Today I bring both disciplines to my work: a pianist’s ear for balance and detail, and a conductor’s sense of leadership.
